Creating a World in your Story.
Recipe 1
Even if it doesn’t exist in the story, a world the story is set in must follow its own logic, and this may be noticed in the text.
Recipe One
Therefore, as part of a group your task is to think of a world and discuss it. You will need a secretary to take notes and also a chairperson to keep the conversation flowing. Be prepared to tell the class what you have been discussing. You need to talk about:
Power and how it is gained in this world you create;
Heirarchies and how they are established;
The Economy and what is valued;
Culture and whether it consists of ways of eating and where, what clothes are worn, what the people value in terms of art and architecture, what books they read or media they value, what they do in their free time, and where they go as tourists on holidays etcetera;
Important Institutions for example, schools;
Religion – Who they worship and how, what they do to initiate people into different stages of their lives, what they do with their old people, and how they arrange funerals etcetera;
and Transport Systems.
Write the first page of a story using the world you have discussed.
